In it, Mather describes witchcraft as the result of Satan’s attempt to exert his power over mankind and supports the notion of “spectral evidence” as evidence. The book is said to contribute to the hysteria that leads to the witchcraft trials in Salem. The full title is: Memorable Providences, Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions is published, as well as his The Declaration of the Gentlemen, Merchants, and Inhabitants of Boston.
